Molding temperature of compression mould

The molding temperature depends on the curing system of the resin paste, the thickness of the product, the production efficiency, and the complexity of the structure of the product. The molding temperature must ensure the initiation of the curing system, the smooth progress of the crosslinking reaction, and complete curing.

In general, part having a large thickness should have a lower molding temperature than a thin-walled part, which prevents excessive heat produce heat build-up inside the thick part. If the thickness of the product is 25-32 mm, the molding temperature is 135-145 °C. Thinner part can be formed at 171 °C.

The increase of the molding temperature can shorten the corresponding curing time; conversely, when the molding temperature is lowered, the corresponding curing time needs to be extended. The molding temperature should be chosen between the fastest cure speed and the optimum molding conditions. It is generally believed that the SMC molding temperature is between 120 and 155 °C.

Sheet molding compound (SMC) is a kind of sheet molding compound made by impregnating fiber or chopped fiber felt with resin paste and covering polyethylene films on both sides, which belongs to the range of prepreg felt. It is one of the most widely used molding materials in the world.

SMC, as a new type of molding compound with rapid development, has many characteristics: (1). It has good reproducibility and is not affected by operators and external conditions; (2). convenient operation and treatment; (3) the operating environment is clean and sanitary, improving working conditions; (4) has good fluidity and can form special-shaped products. Good quality uniformity, suitable for pressing large thin-walled products with little change in cross section; (5)  The surface finish of the obtained product is high, (6) the production efficiency is high, and the forming period is short.

What is SMC Mould

SMC is sheet moulding.

SMC mould usually needs to use hydraulic press machine to produce parts. The cavity and core is fixed to top and bottom platens of machine. Once the material is placed into the open mould, the machine closes, mould gets heated, then the press pressure force material to flow all over the SMC mould. In the end, we can take the finished products from the mould.

SMC molding parts has good dimensional stability and excellent thermal resistance. So it is more and more widely used in heavy truck industry, bathroom, agri industry and other fields.

SMC Mold in Heavy truck industry

SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) works well for heavy duty truck parts, especially ones requiring complexity, strength, and impact resistance.  One of the projects MDC mould is working on is a heavy truck with these SMC parts, including roof spoiler and passenger’s truck fender extensions.  Each of these SMC parts is very complex in geometry because of its complex application. The following is a picture of one of the SMC fender extensions.

If a part needed this much complexity was manufactured with sheet metal, it would have many more pieces of the assembly and much more bracing.  Metal would also not have the resistance to corrosion and impact that is enjoyed by this composite part.

This fender extension with SMC material is from a truck that has been on the road since 1993, with over 270,000 miles on it.  So you can obviously see that composite material has a good application.
